About the Pub
Just north of Salisbury city centre The Wyndham Arms began life in the 1880s as the Wyndham Hotel, and in all its fundamental respects remains unchanged.
More importantly The Wyndham Arms is the birthplace of the phenomenon that is Hop Back, for here in 1987 John Gilbert set up a small micro brewery and produced his Gilbert's First Brew (GFB), moving to Downton, to the South of Salisbury, in 1993 when the brewery's huge success demanded larger premises.
An intimate pub divided into a front parlour, by the chimney piece, a snug to one side and the bar area, it is simply decorated in the Hop back style - namely a large number of awards -- which cover the walls. The Bacchanalian figure above the door, actually that of DIONYSUS, smiling as you enter, sad as you leave, gives the brewery its logo.
The attraction of the pub, apart from the beers, is the clientele, very much a locals house it is also the haunt of free-thinkers.In addition to the prize-winning Hop Back beers, an exciting range of quality wines are always available. There are regular tutored tasting evenings.
The pub is just set back from the A36 coming into the city centre, from which it is very easy to find, so much so in fact that Hop Back is starting to lend its name to the neighbourhood.
