About the Pub
South West London CAMRA pub of the year 2004. On the outside a 'roadhouse' type public house, typical of the suburban pub style of the 1930s, the Sultan is, on the inside, one of South London's hidden treasures.
In true Hop Back fashion the walls are festooned with awards won by Hop Back beers and pubs have won over the years. The Sultan itself was the South West London CAMRA Pub of the Year 1995.
The saloon bar is perhaps unique in being named after a living personality. Ted Higgins's name may not immediately spring to everyone's mind, but he was the original Walter Gabriel in Radio 4s The Archers, before eschewing the wayward life of an actor for the sake of love. He is honoured not for his acting but for his 'beer fingers' and his life-long devotion to good beer.
The Sultan is a traditional locals pub, with no loud music or gimmicky attractions to attract a rowdy crowd. The buzz of animated conversation is all the noise both present or necessary and good Hop Back beers all that are needed to attract good custom.
Just five minutes walk from Colliers Wood tube station (Northern Line), the pub is best approached by car via Haydon's Road, as Norman Road itself is a no through road from the main road. To get there from Olympia take the District line Eastbound to Victoria, change to Victoria Line south and cross the platform at Stockwell to the Northern Line. Journey time 35 minutes.
