First and Last – The Spanish Connection
Pictured above is Charlie Stutchfield, a Summer Lightning fan and regular at the First and Last – Hop Back Brewery’s latest acquisition in Exeter.
A few years ago, Charlie discovered some interesting family history; his grandfather Herbert ‘Papa’ Jones spent some time in Spain as a linguist, and whilst there helped to form the first professional football club in Spain that is today Real Betis of the Spanish La Liga. Not only did he form the club, he purchased the ground where they still play today, supplied the kit, played for them and later became the Club President. (Incidentally, some of you may have spotted that the Real Betis strip is similar to the Glasgow Celtic colours – Charlie’s granddad bought the original strip from a Glasgow retailer!)
Charlie contacted Real Betis, who were so amazed to hear from their founder’s grandson that they invited the whole family to attend their Centenary Celebrations in 2007. Charlie now has the honour of featuring on the Club’s website sporting his Real Betis strip.
